Prized Possessions
Published in Paperback by Berkley Pub Group (May, 1992)
Author: Avery Corman
Average review score:

Excellent, more please
Avery Gorman's book is about a girl who is date raped and her fight to regain her soul. It raises an important question about our whole approach to sexual morality. In our society it is increasingly suggested that we should by sexually desirable and experienced in order to be popular and happy, and that our qualities be publically and even aggressively transmitted. Sex comes first, then, possibily, respect, love, commitment. I suggest this is all back to front. ANY sexual encounter can lead to rape. If we viewd relationships differently, that truly fulfilling sex only follows after respect, love and commitment, there would be no date-rape. This is NOT to say that a girl who is date-raped was "asking" for it: there is no excuse for aggressive assault. But young people need to be educated to realize that true relationships develop from character rather than physical attraction and that true popularity wuill come from maintaining that stand.

Professional ASP.NET Performance
Published in Paperback by Wrox Press Inc (November, 2002)
Authors: Matt Odhner, Doug Thews, James Avery, James Greenwood, Andrew Reid, and K. Scott Allen
Average review score:

A great book!
This book is exceptional. It provides several programming scenarios for different operations, then lists the good and bad points of each. It also explains in which situation they are best used. For example: .NET Remoting vs. Web Services vs. COM

There are several performance tips given that I never thought about and they really work . . . I, of course, had to test them for myself.

If you are like me, you don't have time to test every scenario to find out which technique is best for every situation, this book helped to guide me in the right direction.

Recollections of 92 Years, 1824-1916
Published in Paperback by Howell Pr (November, 1994)
Author: Elizabeth Avery Meriwether
Average review score:

Female historical perspective
This book was written by my husband's great-great-great aunt. When I first received a copy and sat down to read it,I did so mainly for the 'family history'. However, I quickly became enchanted with Elizabeth Avery Merriweather and her fascinating tales of life as a woman during the Civil War. I highly recommend this book if you're looking for a unique gift for a history lover, Civil War buff, or for anyone who can appreciate a story about a determined woman overcoming obstacles in difficult & troubled times.

Luxorious! Excellent selection of tales!
The selection of tales in this book is excellent, the cover and the illustrations are luxorious, and more than worth what you pay. I was very pleasantly surprised when I opened the package and saw this book, because I needed it for a friend, and it is, indeed, a wonderful present.

This is a must!
I happened to see this book at my friend's house but didn't finish the book. So, I went home and ordered it online. After finished reading this book, I must tell you that I'd gained a lot more confidence in winning more money. Last week, I went to Las Vegas with my family, and it DID pay off. Not all the tips and secrets in the book applied, yet I managed to win more money than I'd ever done before. Take it from me, I don't like reading much, but I got to admit that this book is pretty easy to read. Better yet, you can just skip to any chapter you're interested in right away.

Steam Trains (Concise Color Guides)
Published in Paperback by Longmeadow Press (September, 1988)
Author: Derek Avery
Average review score:

Drawings, stats, and comments on trains, in a tiny book.
This book presents a maximum amount of information in a minimal space. Selected locomotives from around the world are included, illustrating the full spectrum of steam locomotive development. The book is chronologically organized, with an index. Each of nearly 100 locomotives has a color drawing, statistics, and commentary included. Yet, the book fits in the average pocket! An excellent reference for the steam locomotive buff.

A Testimonial to Grace: And Reflections on a Theological Journey
Published in Hardcover by Sheed and Ward (September, 1996)
Author: Avery Dulles
Average review score:

Esteemed Jesuit Theologian Dulles's Autobiography a Goldmine
Father Avery Dulles,S.J., has once again demonstrated his intellectual acuity and literary talent with the augmentation of his autobiographical account, "A Testimonial to Grace," which, in its updated form, with its 47 supplementary post-conversion account pages, has been subtitled "Reflections on a Theological Journey." Originally penned in 1946, Fr. Dulles's impressive autobiography, imbued with his trademark erudition, traces the evolution of his philosophy from his early days at Harvard University, where he encountered many thinkers to whose influence he acknowledges a debt, through his Jesuit training years and, ultimately, his work in fields such as ecclesiology and ecumenism in the wake of the Second Vatican Council.Interspersed throughout are unique anecdotes of episodes in Fr. Dulles's illustrious academic and professorial careers involving such luminaries as John Courtney Murray,S.J., and Gustave Weigel,S.J. Fr. Avery Dulles's autobiography will serve as an inspiration to Catholics and non-Catholics alike, interested in the reality of God's ineffable grace and its operation in the human soul by the will of God.It is to this mysterious reality that Dulles wisely attributes his conversion to Christ and His Church, reminding us once again that grace must be freely accepted by everyone who would come into union with God, be he extraordinarily learned or not. Fr. Dulles has indeed performed a great service to us laymen in reminding us of the eternally precious gift of grace, to which his life has indeed been a testimonial.

Tex Avery
Published in Hardcover by World Pubns (March, 1999)
Author: John Canemaker
Average review score:

The King of Comic Animation
Tex Avery was and probably will be the king of the most wackiest animation the world has ever seen. Being the inspiration for future generations of cartoonists, Avery brought us such funny characters as Droopy, Spike the bulldog, Screwy Squirrel, and several Looney Tunes characters.

This book, originally published by the now defunct publishing branch of Turner Enterprises (now part of AOL-Time Warner) is an excellent tribute to the man who gave the cartoon world new ways to express comedy and feelings. From exploding cigars to eyeballs that pop out of their sockets, Avery gave many comedians and animators inspiration (the film "The Mask," with Jim Carrey and his facial expressions are a great example of this).

Most of the cartoons in this book are now owned by Ted Turner (president and CEO of Turner Enterprises, and now one of the executives at AOL-Time Warner) and Turner's preservation of Avery's works will give future generations access to some of the most wackiest cartoons ever made. Overall, an excellent book with beautiful animation cels and a wonderful history of Avery's life and contributions.
